Reading Journal Tips
Updated by on Sunday, September 14, 2008 at 10:24 PM

Reading Journal Instructions:

A one-subject spiral notebook makes a great reading journal.

Daily Reading Journal Entries:

ü     Each  entry on a new page.

ü     Date the entry.

ü     On the top line write the title of the book.

ü     On the second line write the page numbers for what your entry

          will cover.

ü     Skip a line and write your journal entry.

·        Your entry may be written as a fact list or a paragraph.

·        Each entry (whether it is a list or a paragraph) should have 4 – 6 facts about what your read.

An example of a Reading Journal entry:

                                                   June 15, 2008

Soul Surfer

Pages 1-6

1.  The book begins by telling about Bethany’s accident.

2.  Bethany is telling the story herself.

3.  After a quick description of the accident Bethany begins the story

     describing her day.

4.  It is Halloween and she is in Hawaii

5.  She loves seashells and has a great collection.

Or if you prefer you may write your entries in paragraph form.

Soul Surfer

Pages 7-11

It is Halloween in Hawaii and Bethany is going surfing.  She has decided to wear her red, white and blue bathing suit to match her surfboard.  Her mom has been listening to the radio to find out about the weather and wave conditions.  Ginger, Bethany’s dog would like to go with them today but has to stay at home.  Pauaeaka sounds like the best place to go for surfing today.  It is still dark when they leave in the “Beater” (that is what they call their car) and drive past many surfing spots as they head for Pauaeaka at the end of the road.
