Standardized Testing
This spring, to ensure the growth and measurement of an excellent academic program we are implementing a new family of standardized tests from the Educational Records Bureau(http://www.erbtest.org/ ). ERB is a non-profit educational service organization meeting student assessment needs since 1927. ERB is committed to developing improved methods of testing student achievement and interpreting individual and group test results to member schools.
Further, ERB supports strong linkages among students, the curriculum, and assessment practices. SSES will use the Comprehensive Testing Program (CTP4) for Grades 1-8 (March 31- April 4) and the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) for students applying for grades 5th to 8th. Our 5th -8th will be given a an ISEE pilot exam February 25-28. Unlike the ITBS exams that we have used previously, these tests will compare our students to some of the brightest students in the nation in over 1,500 private and suburban public schools.
Tennis & Personal Fitness News
The Tennis Classes traveled to Texas State University on Wednesday to watch tennis at an advanced level. The tennis team participated in a clinic hosted by the Lady Bobcats last month as well.
Personal Fitness class will kayak on March 6th in Austin at Town Lake. We will leave campus at 12:00pm and return at 4:00pm.
Please contact Sarah Sherwood at ssherwood@ststeveschool.org with questions.
What’s Going on in SSES History?
7th Grade Texas History is gearing up for the Texas Revolution. We will be making game boards in class and this is always a hit because they put all kinds of strategies and traps on it dealing with the historical battles or conflicts. We usually get the 5th grade to play them as a way to bridge the gap between 5th and middle school. Possible field trip to the Alamo as well.
6th Grade is learning about the Arabian Peninsula, including the religion of Islam. They are drawing maps of Saudi Arabia and learning geographical facts as well.
8th Grade is studying the Civil War and the Great President Lincoln. They may make a mural of all the conflicts and people during this period.
Science Fair Coming Soon
Parents should have received information about the upcoming science fair at St. Stephen's on March 6. Students have the option to compete at the State Regional Fair this year. The option of individual projects for Grades 1-3 is being offered. If you haven't already submitted your entry forms, please turn them in to the teachers this week. Presentation boards are available at Hobby Lobby and Office Depot.
Contact Annette Paulin at 512. 558. 4523 or preludes@grandeecom.net for more information.
Marathon Kids
The Final Mile of the Marathon Kids program will be on February 23rd at Burger Stadium in south Austin. At the final mile, the kids will run two laps and receive their medal. All participants will receive a t-shirt if they turn in their completed log sheet by the end of February. Please contact Coach G. with questions.
Extravaganza This Spring
Next meeting: Monday, February 25th at 3:30pm in the library. Childcare (Extended Care) will be provided.
Extravaganza is a two day event held the last weekend of April. It is filled with live music, food, children’s performances, and a silent and live auction. We generally raise anywhere from $40,000 - $70,000 for the school.
The silent auction is taking place on Sunday, April 27th after church. There is also a pre-party dinner on Saturday night - a fun event with music, food, entertainment, and a live auction for the grownups. We would love for you to be a part of it!
Please contact Amy Jameson at ksflashers@aol.com with any questions.
