Academics & More:
Archaeology at St. Stephen's
Archaeology at SSES is focused on teaching the methods of archaeological field survey, mapping, excavation, and site recording in three locals along Onion Creek. Partners in the project include The City of Austin Water Quality Lands group, The Mathis Ranch, and the Dahlstrom Ranch, and SWCA Environmental Group. Lessons are in field school situations with an integrated emphasis on site recording and teaching a preservation ethic as well as chronology (prehistory & history), scientific methods, and artistic illustrations and interpretations. The program begins with archaeological survey experiences in the First through Eighth Grades and archaeological excavation in the Fifth through Eighth Grades. The program culminates in a week long interdisciplinary Middle School Trip to study prehistory of the Trans-Pecos with an emphasis on the region’s world renowned rock art. The primary goal of the Archaeology Program is to provide our students with an experiential opportunity for cross-curricular and applied lessons. With the goal of science as service the program facilitates the gifts of high-quality archaeological data and interpretations for our Partners. 512-847-9857 |
