Colin Iliff, an eighth grader at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Wimberley won first place at the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools (SAES) Regional Science Fair in Victoria, Texas with his project, Don’t Go Near the Lights!!
In 2006, Iliff, who lives in San Marcos, also won first place in the Austin Energy Regional Science Fair and advanced to state competition.
In 2005, Iliff was among 400 middle school students around the country selected as semifinalists in the 2005 Discovery Channel Young Scientists Challenge (DCYSC). The DCYSC is the nation’s premiere science contest for students in grades 5-8. Iliff won first place and grand prize awards at the annual St. Stephen’s Science Fair with his project Insulating Factors of Natural Building Materials. His project also won second place in the Junior Engineering Division at the Austin Energy Regional Science Festival, as well as being selected among the top 10 percent of all contestants to win a Discovery Channel Young Scientist Award. At the Exxon Mobile State Science and Engineering Fair, Iliff placed fifth in the Junior Engineering Division against regional winners in sixth through eighth grade across Texas.
